Tamura Jones, an expert on genealogy software, has awarded GenealogyTools.com his “Most Timely Practical Advice Series” award for our “Replacing Family Tree Maker” series. As the series author, I’m extremely pleased for our work to be recognized, and I must say that I owe a lot of what I learned about GEDCOM to reading the articles on his website. I highly recommend Modern Software Experience for the incisive analysis of the technical and practical aspects of software and websites, genealogy or otherwise. Thanks also to Ben Sayer for agreeing to this series.
As Tamura pointed out, the series is a work in progress; my tests and reviews of 11 major desktop genealogy applications are ongoing. To be notified of updates to the series, please use the “Get Email Updates” on the right side of this page or subscribe to our RSS feed.

Congratulations. You deserve this award more than any other blogger. I’m counting on you to help me get myself out of this FTM Mac 3 mess and into something usable that won’t hide or ignore media and drop links to relatives.
Keith says
Thanks, you’re very kind!
We know that some apps, like Reunion, ignore certain media; which apps have you found drop links to relatives?

Lucky me! Genealogy Tools has been one of only 2 Blogs I follow. One was all do this now and buy this now. I almost lost sleep until I read your Blog. I love your calm and intelligent responses to the FTM mess. You are the voice of reason based facts and research. Thank you! So deserving of this recognition.

Thanks! Out of curiosity, what’s the other blog your read? ;^)

Thanks, I’ll check it out. I’ve read some of her articles and seen her at RootsTech but have never looked at her blog. She has a typo in the right side-bar of many pages – can you spot it? I don’t see any way to contact her, though.

What Ancestry’s Retirement of Family Tree Maker Software Means for You
The Genealogist-Protected Approach
Step 1: Purchase a new genealogy software database program and load it on your computer. I recommend and use RootstMagic software. RootsMagic is excellent, reliable and extremely well supported. Click here to read how they are ready to help you in our transition.
Step 2: Back up your entire computer with a Cloud-based backup service. This is critical to protecting and retaining control of your data. I recommend and use Backblaze. (Here’s an article I wrote that will give you a compelling reason not to skip this step.)
Full disclosure: RootsMagic and Backblaze are sponsors of the free Genealogy Gems Podcast. This is primarily because I use the products myself and have been impressed and satisfied with their products. Regardless of which products you choose, just be sure you put the Genealogist-Protected Approach into action.

Thanks, Arlene, I read that and several other of her articles today. Like many genea bloggers, she glosses over the details of exporting and importing a GEDCOM. That’s what my series is all about. There are things to like about RootsMagic, but as I detailed in Part 3 of my series, there are several problems, as well, that could result in loss of data. I’ve submitted my test report to RootsMagic and have as yet to receive any kind of response, even though I have a paid license. However, the week between Christmas and New Year is a period when many companies give their employees time off, so a response may be delayed.
