Upgrading from a Previous Version of Family Tree Maker

Family Tree Maker 2011 upgrades are simple. The new version is installed in a new directory so your previous program is untouched. I recommend making a copy of your family tree data to use with FTM 2012. You can open your files with the new version and remove the old one when you’re ready.

Family Tree Maker 16 and earlier can also upgrade. There’s a Family Tree Maker 2012: Version 16 Upgrade Guide that explains it all.

Family Tree Maker 2012 Discount Coupon Codes

Shipping is free through November 21st.
I keep an eye out for promotional coupon codes that apply to FTM. There are currently no discount coupon codes. If you see one contact me.

Family Tree Maker 2013 Availability and Discount Coupon Codes

In August of 2012, Ancestry announced that there won’t be a FTM 2013. Instead of the annual major release the firm is focusing on fixing and enhancing the 2012 version. So don’t bother looking for Family Tree Maker 2013 discount coupon codes.

Books publishes two helpful books. The first, “The Companion Guide to Family Tree Maker 2012,” covers basic operations while the second, “Beyond the Basics: A Guide for Advanced Users of Family Tree Maker 2012,” covers more advanced topics.

PC Genealogy Software Feature Comparison

I’ve found the selection of the best genealogy software is a highly personal matter. What’s best for you will come down to the presence or absence of a short list of features that are critical to the way you practice genealogy.

I’ve examined the leading genealogy software and compiled a list of features to help you choose. I have copies of all of these except Legacy Deluxe. When I could not verify a feature I relied on third-party sources and product websites. While I have done the best I can to ensure the information provided on this page is correct, it is offered with no warranty. If you note any errors or omissions please contact me.

  1. says

I disagree with you on FTM merging and Reports.
    I use both 2011 & 2012.
I have a large data base and in neither one of them can I get a report.
In the pedigree which runs to about 500 pages they run out of memory at about page 60.
I Legacy the report is made smoothly.
On merging I always get a message “Can not merge identical persons ”
Who else would I want to merge.
In Legacy the merge is easy.

  2. says

I use RootsMagic 5 and can attest that it DOES have the following features not checked in the comparison table:
    – Source Bibliography as in the Source List report and as an option in narrative and other reports having foot/endnote citations
    – Media usage, as in the Media List report which shows every use of a media item
    – Obituary report: unsure of what is meant but might be satisfied by a Custom report
    – County selections: again unsure of what is meant but RM5 has County Checker which can, optionally, be turned on to validate a Place entry for US, UK and Canadian locales against a database of what county it was in at the time of the event. It can also be run manually to check the entire database.

A couple of feature omissions from your tables:
    – Source Templates: while I’m no big fan of how they are implemented in RM, they do represent a significant development effort and are favored by some users
    – Place Details or a place hierarchy
