The accompanying video will show you the major elements of Family Tree Maker 2012. At its most basic, Family Tree Maker consists of the following workspaces.
- Plan
- People
- Places
- Media
- Sources
- Publish
- Web Search
The workspaces group related features. They are made up of tabbed views and panels that you use to plan, research, analyze, preserve, and share your genealogy.
This video will give you a feel for how Family Tree Maker 2012 looks and operates. This is more helpful than for other genealogy software because there’s no trial version of FTM 2012.
Thanks for creating this video. I have been trying to decide which genealogy program to purchase and this video gave me a great overview of the family tree maker program.
Glad to hear it. I suppose I’ll need to make one for FTM 2014 soon.
Still struggling with FTM 2012 trying to sync to an existing online tree. Sync process hangs forever in the Total sync progress: Preparing to apply online changes to Family Tree Maker. I’ve backed up and compressed to no avail. Is there any way to delete the online tree and do the upload again?
Hi Dick. I’m sorry to hear it’s still giving you trouble.
You can delete your Ancestry member tree (AMT). Here’s a link to Ancestry’s help page on the matter:

I can’t help wondering if the continued sync problems are because you’re still using an old version. They fixed a bunch of sync problems in the 2014 release.
With best regards,

Ben,
Thanks for you quick response. I’ll drop hints for FTM 2014 for a birthday gift!
