Occasionally a MacGenealogist opts out of my article alert email list because they don’t want to see articles on software they don’t use. I don’t like to see any of you leave the email list because I think it’s valuable to you. So I came up with a solution. I created separate, focused lists for iFamily for Leopard, MacFamilyTree, and Reunion. A person subscribed to one of these lists will only receive email alerts about articles on that topic.
I would rather you remain subscribed (you are subscribed, right? Click the sticky-note if not!) to the “all articles” list so that you don’t miss articles about topics that may still be of interest to you, but it’s a choice I now offer you.
If you would like to switch your subscription to one of the new focused lists, click the sticky-note in the upper right corner of the page. You’ll get the details there. You’ll automatically be unsubscribed from the “all articles” feed if you subscribe to one of the focused lists.
If the frequency of email alerts is a concern for you, leave me a comment below. If enough MacGenealogists are interested, I’ll create a weekly digest list as another option.
I think/know you are doing a fantastic job with this Web sight. I have learned more with your articles then with any other medium. Thanks. I use Reunion.
Personally, I don't mind receiving those article alerts which relate to software other than mine – but then I'm a Reunion user, so most of the emails are relevant. Otherwise, I might feel differently, and I think it's typical of your excellent approach that you have accommodated those who do.
I get your articles via RSS feed. Will the focussed lists arrangement apply to this, or only to direct e-mail subscriptions?
I'm so appreciative of all your tutorials, I've learned so much. It's not a problem to get all the alerts, I can quickly see if it pertains to me and my Reunion program, otherwise it's just a click to delete. I have no problem with it.
I would definitely prefer a digest. Weekly would be often enough to keep me in the loop, but would cut down drastically on e-mails. Right now, I find myself hitting delete just to clear my inbox!
Most of the lists I subscribe to are in digest format, which I greatly prefer.
The email lists are actually RSS feeds under the covers, John, so the
changes can apply. If you want to subscribe to a focused feed in your
RSS reader, the urls are:
http://feeds2.feedburner.com/macgenealogist/iFa…
http://feeds2.feedburner.com/macgenealogist/Mac…
http://feeds2.feedburner.com/macgenealogist/Reu…
The “all articles” RSS feed remains the feed for the site–the one
automatically discovered by RSS readers.
Ben,
This was a timely post. I was thinking about Unsubscribing as I use GEDitCOM. Will you be giving this software some attention in the coming year? If so, I'll stay subscribed.
I tried the Reunion link, but got:
FeedBurner could not deliver this feed to you because of the specific problem listed below:
Feed Address: http://feeds2.feedburner.com/macgenealogist/Reu..
HTTP Error (Code) and Message: (404) Feed not found error: FeedBurner cannot locate this feed URI.
When I put the link into Mail all I got was a warning triangle. I didn't try the other two.
John.
Before watching your videos, I had MacFamily. I found the ReUnion 9 videos interesting and now have it as my main focus. It makes a bit more work keeping both up to date, but they each have their purpose.
One never knows where the next gem may be hidden!
I started with PAF on a pc and still use the pc.for first input and the Mac virtual Windows on VM Fusion as a backup and portable file. I want your tuturials on the MAC programs. I always hope for technical tutuorials on virtual software and for tricks to improve my skill.
Pat
Absolutely!
Ben,
While Reunion is my program of choice, I want to see everything you send out. I figure that the more I read, the more I learn. Of course, I'm retired and have the time.
I usually find “food for thought” in all your posts, so I absolutely want to continue to get all of them. While Reunion is definitely my main file, I keep “back-ups” (via GedComs) of data in iFamily and MacFamily Tree, as they too have features I like. I find looking at my material in different databases gives different perspectives, and I also spot things (discrepancies, research needs, typos, etc.) that I need to follow up. I do want to continue to receive your posts on all programs. As Laurie says, the delete button is always handy for those that don't apply. 8^)
I love everything just as is. You are providing a great service. I tell everyone I know–who has a Mac–about you. Thank you, you have helped me sooo much.
Ben, thanks for all you do in keeping everyone informed in a wide spectrum of genealogy programs for the mac. I am okay with the feed as it is. It never hurts to see what other programs have to offer. I use Reunion 9 and have used iFamily. Thanks and keep up the good work. Your videos are useful and have helped me utilize features I probably would have skipped over and done things the hard way.
