Some readers may have received a “Summer News” email update about Family Tree Maker from Software MacKiev or seen it on Randy Seaver’s blog, GeneaMusings. If you haven’t seen it yet and are subscribed to the FTM email list, it’s because MacKiev is gradually rolling out the email to everyone on the list, which is quite large, according to MacKiev president, Jack Minsky. Randy Seaver thoughtfully posted the update to his blog, but here are the highlights:
- The free updates for owners of FTM 3 and 2014 are still forthcoming, but if you are having trouble with the software that might be resolved by the update, submit a support request to MacKiev and they’ll send you the latest beta version right away.
- Software MacKiev now supports all versions of Family Tree Maker, so use the support request link above for technical support.
- FTM still works with Ancestry.com, to include TreeSync® and “shaky leaf” tree hints.
- Discounted upgrades are available for owners of older versions of FTM.
- MacKiev invites feature requests and bug reports and makes it easy to submit them on their website. As a reminder, MacKiev provides all of their support through their website and email.
For full details, see the news update at Randy Seaver’s blog.

Thank you….I hate when things I’m comfortable with change….and this one was a big one…having used FTM and Ancestry for years…I’m not excited to try and learn a new system …your input has delayed panic and the abandonment of a hobby I love….

I am trying out the new FTM software on my new MAC. The last one I had was for an IBM platform. I used to be able to precisely “detach” for example a child that had been wrongly attached to a mother. You would have access to a specific window in FTM Windows that permitted you to move an entire branch or individual from one ancestor to another. I tried the Edit Person or Manage Fact and it does not do what the old version permitted me to do. Suggestions?
Keith Riggle says
You can detach a person and reattach them to a different parent(s) by clicking the dropdown arrow on the People button and then Attach/Detach Person. See page 258 of the Companion Guide under the Help menu for details.

I thank you so much for yours suggestions and solutions.
Moving from an IBM (with the old FTM version) to Apple Mac is a bit challenging for me but I am adjusting to the new bells and whistles. This is much appreciated. Love the new Mac by the way! Thanks again.
