Genealogy Software Tutorials for Mac & PC
An update to iFamily for Leopard was released yesterday. This is is what changed in the new version:
The first release of the Macintosh Genealogy Software Comparison table is available. It contains information on iFamily for Leopard, Heredis Mac X.2, MacFamilyTree, ohmiGene, PAW2X, and Reunion 9.
The people behind Heredis Mac X.2, ohmiGene, and PAW2X completed the survey, saving me hours of time so that I could more quickly complete the first of the reviews to accompany this comparison table; Thank you Sylvette, Theirry, and Gus!
Now you can carry your genealogy data with you. With MobileFamilyTree, the new iPhone (and iPod touch) application just released by Synium, all your records are stored on your iPhone. You can edit them there and synchronize additions and changes back to your Mac. Although, not all of the MacFamilyTree fields are editable and one cannot create a new family database on the iPhone. It will handle multiple databases, displays person and family views, and has some display customization options. And the person context view is just plain sexy! Yes, touching a person in this view will bring up the card for that person. There is some bad news though.

Last weekend I began diligently working on a set of Mac genealogy software reviews. I discovered that I have some groundwork to do. Determining what applications are out there that are still being actively improved proved difficult. There isn’t a recent list of them. Something had to be done! If I can’t find a list how are Mac genealogists going to know what options exist?

There’s a nice introduction to virtual computers in Eastman’s Online Genealogy Newsletter. The article informs the reader that virtual computers are made possible by software that lets you to run another operating system (OS), like Windows, while simultaneously running the host OS, in our case, Mac OS X. All this techie talk simply means that with the help of another piece of Mac software, like Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac
you can run Windows programs without leaving the comfort of your familiar Mac.
