Genealogy Software Tutorials for Mac & PC
I got great news from Seeking Michigan today! The partnership between the State of Michigan and the Library of Michigan has resulted in a quarter of approximately 1 million Michigan death records (between the years of 1897 and 1920) being available online, at no charge. The details of the initial launch are in this blog post on the site.
The site is extremely slow right now, so be patient or put it on your to-do list to check out later.
I sat down this morning to record a screencast covering the visible changes introduced in the recent 5.4 release of the Mac genealogy software from Synium. Upon launching the MacFamilyTree, I discovered that there’s been another point release. Version 5.4.1 is now available. The Software Update window lists these items as the changes:
- Kinship Report expanded by two generations
- Additional Names are now shown in the Person Report
- Fixes in the Family Assistant
- Dutch localization added
- Fixes for other localizations
- Many general bug fixes and stability improvements

Occasionally a MacGenealogist opts out of my article alert email list because they don’t want to see articles on software they don’t use. I don’t like to see any of you leave the email list because I think it’s valuable to you. So I came up with a solution. I created separate, focused lists for iFamily for Leopard, MacFamilyTree, and Reunion. A person subscribed to one of these lists will only receive email alerts about articles on that topic.
I would rather you remain subscribed (you are subscribed, right? Click the sticky-note if not!) to the “all articles” list so that you don’t miss articles about topics that may still be of interest to you, but it’s a choice I now offer you.
If you would like to switch your subscription to one of the new focused lists, click the sticky-note in the upper right corner of the page. You’ll get the details there. You’ll automatically be unsubscribed from the “all articles” feed if you subscribe to one of the focused lists.
If the frequency of email alerts is a concern for you, leave me a comment below. If enough MacGenealogists are interested, I’ll create a weekly digest list as another option.
For those of you using this fine PC genealogy software on your Mac, I bring you good news. The “community preview” phase that I have been covering on our sister site, PCGenealogist.com, has ended.
