How to Add Photos and Other Media in Reunion 9

Having photos in your Reunion 9 family file does more than make them available for reports and charts. It also adds flavor and context when looking at family cards. As you can see from the image below, seeing photos brings a family card and one’s family history to life.

In this first screencast in a series, I walk you through the different ways of adding and removing photos in Reunion 9 for Mac as well as giving some background information, pointers, and a solution to a common problem. Treetops

Treetops are a concept in the genealogy software, Reunion 9 for Mac. The term refers to the earliest known ancestor of a given person. They are useful for locating and quickly navigating to brick walls and ancestors on which to focus research. It is also a handy way to move to likely targets for a descendant report or chart. This screencast video from the MacGenealogist Archives, Treetops in Macintosh Genealogy Software Reunion 9 for Mac , demonstrates the use of the treetops feature.

The Secret to Including Preparer Information in RootsMagic 3

The PC genealogy database software, RootsMagic can include preparer information on almost all the reports, charts, and lists it can generate. This information can be set once then included by selecting an option check box. In many cases the inclusion of preparer information is a default, so it will just work after storing the preparer information.

iMedia Browser Updated to Version 1.1.2

Karelia have released an update of iMedia Browser, a tool I demonstrated in a screencast back in August. This utility is a useful addition to your genealogy software toolbox. It is a bug fix release, so if you have this utility installed you’ll want to go update it. The easiest way to accomplish this is to launch the software. It will prompt you to update it if you have that preference setting enabled. If not, click “iMedia Browser” | “Check for Updates…” on the menu.

The details of the changes (provided by Karelia) are listed below.

Bug Fixes

  • iMedia Browser Framework (667)
    • Fix to some instances of requests for photos or movies beyond the boundaries of the list.
    • Permanently disable old delicious parser that is incompatible with this new version.
    • Fix a problem parsing older iPhoto libraries.
    • Maintain selection path in the source between launches.
    • Fix several memory leaks.
    • Improve live updating of libraries.
    • Re-enabled Sounds, iLife Sound Effects, and iMovie Sound Effects which were accidentally removed for 1.1.1.
    • Fix to lightroom database parsing.
    • Fix icons so that iTunes 8 shows the correct icons.
    • Deleted many unused icons.
    • Work around illegal access to items in the photo grid.
    • Localization updates.
  • iMedia Browser Application
    • Fixed an issue where an error loading the problem reporter would generate recursions and crash.
    • Regenerating many English strings.
    • Add tip specific to aperture in help documentation.
    • Improve problem reporter to report symbols in Tiger and Leopard.
    • Bug Fixes to prevent recursive error reporting attempt.
    • Update Sparkle to r318 (1.5b6).
    • Other improvements to problem report sending.
    • Filter out invalid addresses in the email address combo box.
    • Fixed an issue where an error loading the problem reporter would generate recursions and crash.
    • Localization updates.

Known Issues

  • There still may be some errors in photo/movie grid access.
