RootsMagic 4 Enters Public Beta Phase

by on 4 Mar 2009

For those of you using this fine PC genealogy software on your Mac, I bring you good news. The “community preview” phase that I have been covering on our sister site, PCGenealogist.com, has ended. While that in itself is good news, even better is that the public beta phase has begun. If you’d like to get your hands on it, you can sign up here.

Ben, Awhile back you polled us on what genealogy software we were using. I responded with the answer … Reunion 9.08. I thought this was to assist you in not sending out other info alerts on FamilyTree, Roots etc. Now maybe these are things I unknowingly need to be alerted to and look at.????? I appreciate hearing from you. I did purchses Vol 1 CD and eventually will anti up for Vol. 2. Many thanks. Bud Getchell

Hi, Bud. I have been working on getting separate mailing lists set up for Reunion, MacFamilyTree, and iFamily for Leopard for those that prefer it that way. I'll post an article with a video showing how to get switched when it's all ready.

Ben~

Do you have any further information about RootsMagic for the Mac? Is it the best software to sync with New FamilySearch?

Hi, Chris.

RootsMagic isn’t a Mac application. I posted this news item because some MacGenealogists use RootsMagic with PC virtualization software like Parallels Desktop or VMWare Fusion. Sorry for the confusion.

Hi Ben I am converting from a Windows PC to only having Macs in our house. Everything has gone smoothly except the decision on what Genealogy software to use. On my Windows PC I use RootsMagic. As RootsMagic is not available for Macs and I do not want to use PC virtualization software, what Mac software is able to import my RootsMagic files from my backup on my external hard drive? Thanks Gavin

Hi, Gavin. You would have to export your RootsMagic data to a GEDCOM file. Any modern genealogy application will import that. It won’t be completely smooth though.

Here’s an option you may not be aware of: use CrossOver Mac to run RootsMagic on your mac. RootsMagic is one of the Windows applications that reportedly works with CrossOver Mac. I haven’t used it myself as the company hasn’t returned my email about an evaluation copy.
