MacFamilyTree Updated to 5.3.10

by on 9 Feb 2009

This update of the Macintosh genealogy application from Synium lists the following changes:

  • Bug fixes for the timeline
  • Stability improvements
  • Localization fixes for English and Swedish

Short, but sweet and the regular updates, especially fixes are appreciated.

There’s nothing in this one that a video walkthrough can demonstrate so I won’t be producing one.

MacFamilyTree is a pretty bit of fluff, but it failed for me with one of what I consider to be a necessary and basic tool: the ability to search for duplicates and merge duplicate records. Without this ability you can enter data from the keyboard all you want, but whoa betide you if you attempt to merge someones juicy gedcom with your existing database.

Sorry, no sale.

I have to say that MacFamilyTree is a pretty but not particularly usable product. I reported a problem, that virtual family tree hangs, back in November and have gotten almost no support. They did ask for a copy of my tree but didn't actually do anything with it.

So, I just tried the latest version, 5.3.10. It did eventually render the virtual tree so that's an improvement. However, it took 13 minutes! So, I'm declaring the product unusable and will stop wasting my time on it.

With three major issues: product scalability, complete lack of support and no capability for merging duplicate records, I'm going to declare it dead. Enough is enough.

If you're thinking about this product, I'd advise you not to waste your money.
