I haven’t made any snow people this season, so last year’s will have to do.
At this special time of year the focus is on family even more than usual. I count you all as members of my great family. Bless you all in the coming year!
Legacy Family Tree is among the best of the genealogy database software for the PC and you can use the Standard Edition for free. This makes trying the application risk free, whether your new to genealogy or already using another program.
There is a Deluxe Edition and naturally it includes features not in the Standard Edition, but the free version has more than enough capability to make it useful. I’ve found that genealogy software is like shoes. All, but the most exotic are suitable, but each pair either feels right for you or doesn’t. Trying the Standard Edition will help you decide if Legacy Family Tree is a good fit for you.

MacFamilyTree 5.3.6 release contained a new feature in the virtual globe view. The release notes described it as “Virtual Globe marks events out of date range.” I found that it excludes events outside a date range. So it actually marks events within a date range. I also found an anomaly in it’s behavior, which I cover in the screencast. Those two issues aside, the new feature is a nice addition to the software.
In this video, Event Date Range in Mac Genealogy Software MacFamilyTree, I show you where the new setting can be found and how to use it.
Reunion 9 for Mac includes a feature that helps you eliminate mistakes in genealogy event dates. It’s called date feasibility checking and it has two modes: interactive and report. Interactive date feasibility rules are evaluated whenever a birth, marriage, or death event is changed. The whole set of rules is evaluated when a date feasibility report is generated. Feasibility checking can ferret out typos and mistakes like setting a person’s marriage event to a date after their death date. Ugh, that’s nasty!
In this video from the MacGenealogist Archives, Date Feasibility Checking in Reunion 9 for Mac Genealogy Software, I take you step-by-step through each setting and show you what effect it has in genealogy software Reunion 9 for Mac.
The online auction site eBay can be a great tool for locating and obtaining genealogical items. For instance, there are regularly family bibles for sale. Imagine a family bible belonging to one of your relatives being sold without you knowing of its availability! Don’t let that happen to you. Watch this video, Finding Genealogy Items on eBay, in which I take you step-by-step through these common genealogy item searches on eBay:
Finally, here is a tip I didn’t mention in the video: Only use the word “and” in a search if the search phrase actually includes it (the same goes for the word “or”). eBay’s search isn’t as feature rich as most of the online search tools we are accustomed to as genealogists. It doesn’t have the ability to do and/or queries.
In the next screencast in this series I’ll show you how to automate these searches so you don’t have to run them yourself. If you like this video topic, you’ll be interested to know that the bonus screencast available exclusively in the MacGenealogist Archives, demonstrates a little known way to win eBay auctions at lower prices.
